About us

Open House Tartu

Open House Tartu is an architecture and urban space festival for everyone who lives in or visits Tartu.

For one weekend, selected buildings open for free guided tours. The programme includes places that stand out for their architecture, history or cultural importance.

Most tours are led by volunteers and prepared with architects, historians, building managers, residents and others who know the buildings well. Visitors can explore spaces that are usually closed to the public.

All buildings have tours in Estonian, and some offer tours in English. In 2026, the programme also included four street tours.

The first Open House Tartu took place in 2024 and the second festival in 2026.

Open House Tartu is a satellite event of Open House Tallinn and part of the Tallinn Architecture Biennale programme. It is organised by the Estonian Centre for Architecture.

We hope to see you again in 2028. Until then, visit the annual Open House Tallinn festival.

Team

Open House Tartu is organized by Estonian Centre for Architecture (ECA). It is a non-profit institution developing the architectural culture in Estonia and promoting contemporary Estonian architecture abroad.

Looking to the future, however, we are engaged in the research and promotion of sustainable architecture and the technologies related to circular construction.

International Open House Family

The Open House concept was founded in London in 1992 with the aim of fostering a better understanding of architecture outside the profession. This format resonated with cities around the world and led to the creation of Open House Worldwide Family in 2010. Currently, the Open House weekend happens every year in more than thirty cities around the world: Barcelona, Helsinki, Rome, Melbourne, New York, and many others. All of these cities are united by the international network of “Open House Worldwide” and by a common goal: to involve the public in discussions about the quality of the architecture and the environment while helping people to understand and learn about these buildings and spaces through direct experience.
