The A. Le Coq brewery complex, built from red bricks, dates back to the late 19th century (1893-1898) when the Tivoli brewery decided to establish new production facilities on the Tähtvere Hill. The English company A. Le Coq acquired the Tivoli brewery in 1912 and continued and expanded the production of beer and soft drinks here.

The projects for the buildings were designed by Reinhold Guleke, the most famous architect of his time in Tartu. The last to be completed in 1898 was a 34.4-meter-high malt drying tower with a decorative air vent, which has become one of Tartu’s symbols. The exterior wall of the malt house is adorned with pilasters and decorative cornices, and the top of the tower is decorated with battlements. The tower was used for drying barley for exactly 100 years. Today, the A. Le Coq malt tower stands as a symbol of Tartu’s industrial heritage.
