In Ülenurme, right next to Tartu Airport, stands an intriguing and unique building known colloquially as the “propeller.” It is Estonia’s only institution of higher education in aviation, founded in 1993 under the name Tartu Aviation College and renamed the Estonian Aviation Academy in 2008. The propeller-shaped educational building is located in close proximity to the Tartu airstrip. The “propeller” was completed in 2011, with architectural design by the architecture firm Lunge & Ko and construction by Arco Ehitus OÜ.
The Aviation Academy building is a modern educational and administrative center, with approximately 300 students and around 70 faculty and staff members. In addition to conventional classrooms, the building also houses modern aircraft and helicopter simulators, as well as a 360-degree view air traffic control simulator.
