Tartu University Observatory was completed in 1810. The building served as an active observatory until 1964, making significant contributions to astronomy. In 1824, the observatory acquired Fraunhofer’s refractor, the largest and best lens telescope in the world at that time. Under the leadership of Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve and Taavet Rootsmäe, the observatory conducted innovative research in areas such as binary stars and celestial maps. After World War II, its activities changed, and in 2010, it became a museum. Today, it stands as a historical landmark, showcasing Estonia’s rich scientific heritage.
