Address:Vanemuise 46, Tartu
Architects:1914, Otto Hoffmann
The building on Vanemuise Street in Tartu, nearly 110 years old, serves as both the academic building for the University of Tartu’s Department of Natural Sciences and the home of the Natural History Museum. Designed by architect Otto Hoffmann, the magnificent neoclassical building with columns was completed at the end of 1914 as a teaching building for the University of Tartu, but during World War I, it also functioned as a military hospital. The University of Tartu regained the building in the early 1920s, but it suffered heavy damage during World War II in 1944.
When the building celebrated its 100th anniversary, the museum section underwent significant renovations – rooms were refurbished, windows were reopened, and balconies were added.
However, our tours primarily focus on the educational part, including the University of Tartu’s largest lecture hall (500 seats) and classrooms-laboratories.
